A PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE

“Happiness can be successfully pursued, but it is not easy
Sonja Lyubomirsky

Some of the best insights The Science of Happiness has been able to uncover centre around what factors impact our happiness.
In this short video featuring Sonja Lyubormisky breaks down what exactly influences our capacity to feel happy.

There are three overarching factors that influence our ability to feel happy:

Intentional Activity

The activities and behaviours we purposefully decide to participate in.

Circumstances

Our socio-economic background and situation.

Set Point

Our genetic and biological disposition.

Intentional activity can be made up of a multitude of things. It refers not just actual activities you take part in, but mindsets, values, and behaviors you consistently practice and aspire to. These could be:

  • Nurturing and finding a sense of joy in personal and social relationships
  • Being comfortable acknowledging and expressing gratitude
  • A strong sense of community and commitment to helping others
  • Feeling optimistic about the future
  • Living for the moment, savoring pleasures, and acknowledging the good in each day
  • Making physically beneficial activities a priority, such as exercise and avoiding smoking
  • Having a religious or spiritual affinity
  • Pursuing and committing to personal goals

DISCOVERING YOUR OWN INTENTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Of course, while this list is an excellent starting point, some of us find it difficult to really pin down specific areas to focus on and increase our intentional activity for happiness.

Well, one of the hugely important areas actually lies in the work we do.

Research has shown that when we feel purposeful about our work, we also feel happier. But feeling happy at work isn’t something many of us have explored, often having secured jobs for financial or economic means.
